"Good design, like good art, never goes out of style." - Jeffrey Kerns
You don’t have to be a professional interior decorator to
create the perfect room. The most successful room designs come from someone who
is able to balance colors, style, design and rhythm. Just use your imagination and make sure you will be happy with the end result!
Here are some tips you can use as a guideline when it is time to design the perfect room,
all by yourself!
Interview Yourself:
Sit down and think about what type of room you want to create. Writing down
your thoughts will help a lot with the design process because you will be able to go back and reference
your ideas. Make a list of things that you want to include in your space.
Include what colors you want, what style, and just brainstorm some ideas.
Make Hard Decisions
First: Pick an object that you want to create your room around. This piece
would be the “anchor” of your room. You can choose a table, a sofa or even an
older antique that you wish to keep in your room. Build around this piece because
it is obviously one of the most important aspects of your design.
Set the Mood: Now
it is time to think about what type of atmosphere you wish to have in your
room. What type of feeling are you looking for? Use colors that fit your mood.
For example, light blues and greens can set a relaxing feel whereas reds and
yellows can create a happy, upbeat feeling.
Create Balance:
Now it is time to look at smaller furniture pieces. Move out of your comfort
zone. Picking items that are too similar will create a boring look. Choose
items that stand out. Pick some masculine and feminine items, some old and new,
and some dark and light. For example, a neutral colored sofa will look great
alongside an elaborate accent chair.
Experiment with Size:
Choose items, large or small in size, that you think will look great in your
room. It always helps to measure your room dimensions before you go pick out your pieces. You
want to make sure that your room doesn’t look too small if you have a large piece
of furniture in it or too big if your furniture is too small.
Accessorize: Many
people see an accent item at the store and immediately want to purchase it
before finishing their room. Wait to accessorize until the very end of your
design process so that everything fits well into your room. Add accessories
with bright colors and interesting fabrics to create more excitement in your
room.
